What Fairtrade actually means and why you should care
Globally, over 45 million people are victims of modern slavery. Fairtrade can play a key role in tackling this problem, but not everyone is familiar with the what, how and why... Remix have put together a beginners guide to understanding Fairtrade so you too can make a difference.
WHAT IS FAIRTRADE?
Fairtrade is the most robust ethical trading system with rigorous standards that take into account social, environmental and economic concerns for a holistic approach. Fairtrade’s vision is a world in which all producers can enjoy secure and sustainable livelihoods, fulfill their potential and decide on their future.
HOW CAN YOU TELL IF A PRODUCT IS FAIRTRADE CERTIFIED?
By the label! The Fairtrade symbol is an independent label that indicates a product has met internationally- agreed Fairtrade Standards. If you see this stamp, the product has been certified, and the Fairtrade ingredients in the product have been audited throughout the supply chain.
WHY IS FAIRTRADE IMPORTANT?
Choosing to buy Fairtrade products not only helps thousands of struggling growers in developing countries but also the environment. You can easily create change for people around the world through something as simple as deciding to buy Fairtrade products. Fairtrade is 50% owned by farmer and worker organisations.
Now more than ever, it’s important to consider buying Fairtrade. Small business owners and their employees (including small-scale farmers and agricultural workers) who have already been living on tight margins, are further at risk to keep roofs over their heads from the effects of COVID-19. These workers already living paycheck to paycheck, will be the first and hardest hit by this period of social isolation and economic slowdown. You can help by supporting Fairtrade brands and produce.
Environmental protection is another key element of Fairtrade’s view of sustainability. Fairtrade Standards prohibit the use of certain agrochemicals that are harmful to the environment and encourage farmers to reduce their use of pesticides. More than 50 percent of all Fairtrade certified producers are also certified as organic. This allows farmers to improve their land and develop nutrient-rich soils which support healthy plants and encourage wildlife to help control pests and diseases.
