On a quest for a healthier future after some questionable decisions made in her early twenties, Remix Digital & Lifestyle Editor, Nina chats with the Founder of SRW - Science, Research, Wellness Laboratories on his study of cellular ageing and their products that are said to reverse your biological age. How did you fall into the field of biotechnology, particularly in cellular ageing?

I have been a pharmacist for the last 30 or so years. More recently, I founded a biotechnology company, SRW (Science Research Wellness) Laboratories that looks at the impact of the time-associated decline of all elements of the cell and seeks to slow these processes down holistically. And why the focus on cellular ageing? Because all of the diseases we associate with being older – like Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, vascular disease and so many more are now considered a syndrome of cellular ageing. If we can slow the process of cellular ageing, then we have an opportunity to lower the risk of encountering these issues or push them further down the line so that we effectively extend our health span.

What is the difference between biological age and chronological age?

Chronological age is your traditional measure of age, the one that we celebrate every advancing birthday. Biological age, also referred to as cellular age, is essentially the age your cells are acting, and it turns out that your chronological age and cellular age can be quite different. Your cellular age is influenced by environmental and lifestyle factors. Things like how much you exercise, how well you sleep, UV damage, alcohol consumption, exposure to pollution, stress, how social you are and your predominant diet, to name a few. 

How does the DNAᵃᵍᵉ test work?

DNAᵃᵍᵉ is a ground-breaking blood test that uses the latest developments in epigenetics to reveal how well you are ageing. The test measures 3 key metrics: Your cellular age, Pace of ageing and Telomere length. Your Cellular Age gives you amazing insight into how well you are ageing given all of the lifestyle choices you have made over your lifetime. Your Pace of ageing is a very interesting number as it tells you how well you are travelling through time at the exact moment of the test. Those with a number below 1 have a much lower risk of having a health condition than someone with a number above 1. And the news is good. You can change this number by making lifestyle changes associated with being healthier and you will see your Pace of ageing slow down.
