Remix gets ripped: Tim tries Les Mills Grit Strength

Winter’s here but that doesn’t mean it’s all comfy pants and cheat eating, and we at Remix are determined to prevent the summer months from surprising us. Instead, we’re hitting up Les Mills for a regular dose of motivation via their international group training classes.

I’ve been a member of Les Mills for 10 years but I’ve never been to a class before and I was pleasantly surprised. I usually only do weights when I’m at the gym so trying out Les Mills Grit on Victoria Street was a whole new experience. I did the class on the weekend so the atmosphere was energetic but the best part of the class was the music. They had great tracks like Diplo so you could lunge or shoulder press to the beat.

Grit Strength is a 30 minute high intensity workout that challenges your whole body not just physically but mentally too. It’s a full body workout using barbells, weight plates and your own body weight to work out all major muscle groups.

We started with a full body warm up to get our blood pumping and ready for the next tracks. Right from the start, our instructor was really encouraging and pushed me to work harder but at the same time I could stop and catch my breathe, especially on my first session.

Not a minute is wasted in this class, I would glance over at the clock and see that there’s only 3 minutes left which generally goes really fast but not when you’re doing a ladder challenge or a burpee challenge. The class finished with an ab workout so you really do get a full body workout in just 30 minutes. I felt great after the class, I pushed myself to the limit and I was sweating uncontrollably but I grabbed a protein shake from the Les Mills cafe and I was ready for the day.

I’ve gone back a few times since my first session and I’ve already noticed some small changes. I can now last a full track without having a breather and I’ve noticed I’m more energetic throughout the day. These 30 minute HIIT classes prove that you don’t have to spend hours training at the gym. 30 minutes is all it takes to get a leaner, and toner bod.
