Drive-thru art: Art meets design with the all-new Golf
When the worlds of art and motors collide, you’ll find the all-new Volkswagen Golf 8 showcased across an artistic journey by artist Jason Woodside. In a coming together of art and design, the collaboration saw Woodside take to the road, driven in purpose (no pun intended) to capture New Zealand’s most scenic landscapes and create a unique collection of exciting visual content.
Although currently settled in New Zealand as an escape for an awakening lifestyle, Woodside first set off his artistic career in taking on the Big Apple, attending the School of Visual Arts in the early 2000s. Woodside is not one to shy away from bold artistic styles, with his work bounded by bold textures, vivid colours, contrasting patterns and public exterior settings, creating the visual cohesion showcased throughout his unique pieces. Specialising in painting with acrylics and aerosols, much of his art is inspired by the natural beauty of surrounding landscapes, emphasised with lights and textures.
“The tour itself was taking the idea of framing out a moment and capturing an experience, signifying the launch of the all-new Golf and the journey and heritage around it,” says Woodside.
The sleeker than ever eight-speed automatic Golf carried Woodside to Taupo, the Coromandel, Northland, Auckland, Wellington, Queenstown, Taranaki and Christchurch. The end result? The landscape proved as Woodside’s canvas, inspiring him to frame out eight quintessential Kiwi landmarks using his own hand-painted frames.
Woodside says his art for this project was very much influenced by the nostalgia of both the New Zealand landscape and the iconic Golf itself. “Golf has always been a car that has resonated with creatives and artists especially. The vehicle has a very powerful heritage which lends itself to bold imagery and strong narratives.”
The Golf 8 provides an upgraded standard to the new era of hatchback, offering you celebrity treatment - literally. From your own personal bodyguard in the form of the intelligent driver assistance systems, supporting you in even the most monotonous driving situations, as well as providing a private jet-esque experience with the all-new digital cockpit.
Keeping up with endless work calls to sharing our daily lives across Instagram stories has also never been easier, with wireless charging available on the go for compatible smartphones. With the head-up display, you’ll be able to keep your eyes on the road with the most important information projected on the display. If you couldn’t already tell, we’re a little obsessed, especially after hearing about the shift-by-wire system, meaning the gear knob is that much smaller.
“I think it’s a perfect collaboration, as VW has always been a car for creatives and free thinkers... I personally love the new Golf. It’s quick, reliable and also very versatile. I always have racks on mine, which is perfect for surfboards or art materials” says Woodside. Much like Woodside’s illusionary art, the Golf 8 has been digitally remastered for the latest generation, creating a level in which all of the functional displays and controls have become digital.
