Be the Best Dressed at Whips n Spurs this Weekend
Kicking off the summer racing calendar this Saturday 28th October is Whips n Spurs, the most playful and edgy of all race days.
Any race day is an excuse to dress up and put together a beautiful outfit. However, you’ll have dual purpose for dressing up this weekend as 1) Whips n Spurs has a more playful dress code than traditional racing attire (we’ll take just about any excuse to go shopping!), and 2) if you’re spotted by Auckland Racing ambassador Carena West and crowned as the ‘Spring Filly’, you’ll win a prize pack valued at more than $1,100, which includes goodies from Miss Crabb, Art of Nails, OPI, Bombay Sapphire and Auckland Racing Club! Yes!
But it doesn’t stop there. Pick up some Hanoi-style street food from Indochine Kitchen in between races, take your pick from a bespoke cocktail menu, or toast with a glass of French champagne. Plus, dance the night away as Sydney-based DJ Mia Paris hits the decks.
With all this in mind, we've pulled our favourite looks from some of New Zealand's top designers to help you get race ready for Saturday.
Trelise Cooper
Trelise Cooper always brings the A-game to racing season and this year is no different. From fresh, greenery-inspired prints to glitzy gold brocade and the brightest of pinks, every taste is covered. We love the flippy, tropical-inspired She Frill Be Loved dress with the almost-matching Crop the Question coat over the top. The millennial pink choker brings an edge to an otherwise uber feminine look. Big hair also offsets this look, so go for loose, wild curls rather than a typical sleek 'do. Finish the look off with a pair of killer sunnies.
Karen Walker
For the not so 'girly' girl, Karen Walker has a range of sultry, on-trend pieces to complete your glamorous yet understated Whips n Spurs look. The Unicorn Riders dress is the perfect amount of feminine and edgy. The high-neck, bow and dark floral print scream ladylike, while the asymmetric hem keeps it modern and fun. Paired with the Dali heels in gold, this is one race day outfit we'd love to see someone wearing!
Miss Crabb
Forget the LBD this weekend - it's spring and that means we have a license to wear colour, colour and more colour! The Atomic dress is simple but punchy in red, and oh-so-dreamy in lavender. Pair the red version with matching shoes and lipstick. Keep it simple in lavender but throw on bold earrings to add a modern, on-trend edge. This dress is backless, so throw a chic spring coat around your shoulders if it's chilly.
Kate Sylvester
The Spring Racing collection from Kate Sylvester appeals to our sweeter side. Floaty dresses, playsuits that drape elegantly, and lots of lace, make it hard to choose a favourite! The Nadia dress is the absolute pinnacle of ladylike glamour, but with a modern print and colour - perfect for clinking glasses with your favourite ladies in the Cuvee champagne bar. Tone down your heels by wearing nude and keep hair sleek and minimal to ramp up the modern, edgy vibe of this gorgeous gown.
The racecourse gates open at 11am and Whips n Spurs opens at 12pm, with all bars closing at 8pm. Remember, a dress code does apply - although this won’t be a problem in any of the above outfits!
