The most notable Met Gala beauty looks of 2016

The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Gala is arguably the most exciting night on the fashion calendar. Although fashion is the star of the event, the celebrities in attendance did not neglect their beauty looks. 

This year's theme was 'Manus x Machina: Fashion in an age of Technology'. Stars came out in droves; some opted for classic looks, while others took the theme literally.

Amandla Stenberg let her silver accessories do the talking with a double-layered headband, septum ring and choker. She balanced the adornments with flawless natural hair and makeup.

Chloe Grace Moretz opted for soft hair and makeup, balancing out out her edgy gown. The actress sported old Hollywood curls, a fresh face and a light pink lip. She didn't forget the key beauty look of the evening - full brows, which give the otherwise edgy look a girlish feel.

Pop singer Demi Lovato wore her dark lob (loosely) slicked back. Her makeup was neutral in tone, with a focus on strong brows, contouring and a smoky eye. The Kim Kardashian-esque look was completed with a nude lip.

Elle Fanning went for a modern look. The 18-year-old actress paired her champagne coloured gown with a tight, high ponytail. Her makeup was minimalistic, with light contouring, a creamy-pink blush and natural lips. The get-up was completed with a body chain.

Emma Stone opted for an edgier look than we are used to seeing on her. The red-headed beauty dyed her strands a dark auburn and donned a charcoal smoky eye.

Taylor Swift kept her shaggy bleached bob (initially dyed for her Vogue cover shoot) and ditched her signature red lip, instead wearing a deep purple. Is Tay Tay in the midst of a style transformation?

It-girl Sofia Richie let her gown do the talking, with loose waves and soft, neutral makeup.

Hailee Steinfeld's hair was loosely pulled back, letting her bold makeup steal the show. Her deep wine lip lacquer was paired with an equally bold brown smoky eye and chunky gold bead necklace.

Hailey Baldwin kept things modern with a sleek ponytail, dewy skin, light grey eyeshadow and multiple earrings.

Karlie Kloss wore her hair very tight, letting her dark red lip and high-necked gown be the main event.

Kendall Jenner subscribed to the look of the night: simple makeup, slicked back hair and stud earrings.

Katy Perry took the theme to the extreme. The pop star donned a foot-high beehive, architectural bangs, purple eye makeup, huge gold earrings and black lips. Can't knock the gal's commitment.

Actress Kristen Stewart stayed true to herself with a messy topknot and glowing skin, but honoured the evening's theme with geometric silver eyeshadow.

Kylie Jenner ditched the colourful wigs and mermaid-length extensions. The youngest Jenner went for a sleek and blunt bob and bronze-toned makeup.

Lily Aldridge wowed with gold eyebrows and rust coloured lips. To balance the unique makeup, her hair was slicked back impeccably.

Lupita Nyong'o wore her hair in a unique up do, paired with simple makeup and diamond drop earrings.

Saoirse Ronan opted for an ultramodern look, with winged eyeliner and (in true 2016 Met Gala fashion) a slicked-back hairdo.

Eternal girl crush Tavi Gevinson went for the hair style of the night. She paired the sleek wet-look do with a red lip.

The stunning Zendaya's look was certainly one of the most notable of the 2016 Met Gala. The 19-year-old fashionista wore a modern bowl-cut style bob.
