Wilder and Hunt: The new real food eatery in Ponsonby

Wilder and Hunt

63 Mackelvie St, Ponsonby, AKL, NZL

Words and photography by Lauren Matilda Matthews from The Kitchen Collective. Following the success of her first premise in St Heliers, Amy Gibson has swiftly opened the doors to her brand new ‘real food’ eatery Wilder and Hunt, right in the heart of Ponsonby. The space is bright and airy, a large communal table stands before a floor-to-ceiling shelf, housing a raft of good-for-you grocery items - including Wider and Hunts’ growing number of own products including muesli, ginger loaf and lemon curd; all of which are free of refined sugar and grains. The length of the space is occupied with plenty of smaller tables, and the shared courtyard hidden behind the building will be a welcome sanctuary in the warmer months. At the counter is a large cabinet, full of imaginative ready-to-eat savouries, meals and sweet treats. The chicken burger, which I must add is paleo and primal friendly, is as tasty as it is satisfying. The chia seed puddings also deserve an honourable mention – topped with crunchy house made muesli, coconut yoghurt and organic blueberries. I don’t think I could possibly be happy with a bland bowl of cereal ever again. Sweets include ‘Snickers’ bars, moist cupcakes rich with homemade dark chocolate, and a bounty of other items that will cure any sweet craving without the proceeding sugar slump. Along with the daily take-home meals, and freezer full of hearty dinner options, Amy says the cabinet is about to double in size, as after just one week feeding Ponsonby’s obviously health-conscious customers, they’ve been selling out everyday. Welcome to Amy and her fabulous team. It’s plain to see, with a successful recipe of delicious, healthy food, imaginative smoothies, decent coffee and a ton of passion; Wilder and Hunt is just what the doctor ordered.
