Everything you need to know about the 2019 BBMA's
The 2019 Billboard Music Awards hit Las Vegas’ MGM Garden Arena earlier this week resulting in a massive night for A listers. Hosted by Kelly Clarkson, the night consisted of Taylor Swift kick starting the show with her new single “Me”, a well awaited Jonas brothers reunion and rapper Cardi B nominated for 21 awards. However the star of the night went to Drake, who became the most-awarded artist in BBMA history, receiving 12 awards on the night, bringing his grand total to 27. Ariana Grande had a highly successful night winning awards for Top Female Artist as well as the Billboard Chart Achievement Award. Grande also delivered an exceptional performance of her chart topping single “7 rings.”
While the night boasted high energy with performances from OG’s such as Madonna, Paula Abdul and Mariah Carey, the ceremony also included a handful of somber moments. Imagine Dragons lead singer Dan Reynolds used his acceptance speech time to touch on the lack of protection towards the LGBQT+ community, while Drake and Florida Georgia Line both encouraged artists to be kind to one another and to use their platforms to spread light.
Mariah Carey took the biggest honour of the night after being presented by Jennifer Hudson with the Billboard Icon Award. The singer delivered an electric medley of hits backed up by a choir, mini orchestra and a giant “M” on stage. Carey thanked Billboard for having her growing up on the charts, and also thanked her fans for the support over the years.
In short, the night showcased an array of young talent who seem to be making their own history within the Billboard charts, while the original artists who inspired them received the recognition they deserve. The cherry on top of the eventful night was the closing of the show in which red confetti showered every inch of the star flooded arena.
