Auckland's most underrated restaurants, according to four Kiwi food bloggers
Food is best enjoyed with great company, and even better wine, but many Aucklanders will understand the absolute struggle of finding a restaurant on a Friday night that isn’t chaotic and crowded. Sometimes you just don’t want to dine with what seems like half of the City.
Constantly fueling our food envy by sharing drool-inducing snaps on their Instagram feeds, we're forever looking to food bloggers to inform where we should have our next meal. Most people can relate to the feeling of seeing a picture of an aesthetically-appealing restaurant or exquisite looking meal and feeling an overwhelming surge of desperation to find out where the heck in Auckland that is.
We tapped four of our fave Auckland-based food bloggers to share their favourite restaurants that are seriously underrated, and serve up seriously good food.
Catherine Milford runs her blog, Eats Cooks Reads, and focuses on Kiwi fare. She says that there are so many fantastic gems hidden away that deserve the accolades. Catherine mentions Asian Wok in Browns Bay as “one of the best yum cha eateries in Auckland”. As well as Hansan on Wairau Road, “there’s nothing fancy about Hansan, but I absolutely love it.”
Delaney Mes writes for her self-titled blog about cooking, eating, drinking and travelling. Her favourite café for some of the “best coffee in Auckland” is Coffee Pen in Eden Terrace. Delaney recommends the banana bread, the chefs dish of the day and the speciality cakes and tarts.
Auckland food blogger Jess Scott shares snaps of her eats on her Instagram, @jesshatescooking. Be warned before scrolling down her feed, it will definitely make you hungry. Jess recommends Po Brothers in Ponsonby, “Their menu is incredible and I've loved every dish I've had there… My top picks have to be the Deep Fried Golden Chicken Skin and the Char Keuy Teow”. Her special mentions also go out to El Sizzling Chorizo in Ponsonby Central for succulent steaks and Tucks And Bao in Newmarket that has an “epic menu”.
Andrea Wong has been running her food blog So D’lish for 10 years now and says restaurant Blossom Court in Panmure is her pick, known for its “really nice, authentic Malaysian cuisine”. Andrea shares that you simply can’t go wrong with the pork belly.
Our Remix restaurant recommendation has to be Miss Clawdy, a Southern American themed food spot in Wynard Quarter with great vibes and fantastic service. If you want a coffee catch-up, check out MELBA, its set up on Vulcan Lane makes you feel like you’re in a trendy Melbourne café.
