The menswear trends taking over summer street style

Now that the weather is warming and we’re officially adding ice to our morning coffees, we can safely say that the summer street style season is well upon us. From Paul Mescal’s Gucci short-shorts to Jacob Elordi’s iconic Bottega Veneta ‘manbag’, there is no denying that there has been no shortage of refreshing menswear inspiration (and Hollywood heartthrobs) available to us as of late.

As an office full of lovely ladies, there can sometimes be a disconnect between what we want our men to be wearing, and what they’re actually wearing. Lucky for us, my boyfriend happens to be a leading voice of authority when it comes to menswear - a title which I appointed him.

So, without further ado, here are the menswear brands that should be on your radar this summer (according to my boyfriend) …

Carhartt WIP

With Superette now stocking the iconic workwear brand, Carhartt WIP has never been more accessible to my ‘workwear reimagined’ loving boyfriend. Combining utilitarian design with quality construction and timeless silhouettes, I can see why the heritage brand is so highly-rated by a man who values quality over quantity. Spotted on the streets of all the world’s major fashion capitals (and in my boyfriend’s wardrobe), the Carhartt WIP Detroit Jacket might just be the most versatile piece a man could ask for.

Hot Tip: To further achieve the ‘workwear reimagined’ look, try Dickies, Levi’s and YouKnow.

Gentle Monster

What is summer street style without some sick shades? Korean eyewear brand, Gentle Monster, has captivated the hearts of fashion lovers all over the world, including my boyfriend’s. Not only does the brand focus on unique eyewear design that is equally playful and practical with a ‘low-bridge fit’ in their lenses, but also on creating unconventional and innovative retail experiences - I’m talking giant fluffy unicorns to large-scale mechanical moving faces. Although the brand is not yet stocked in New Zealand, I don’t doubt that Gentle Monster will be adorning the faces of stylish men (and women) this summer.

Porter James Sport

A recent discovery of his, Porter James Sport by Kiwi designer Joshua Heares, takes a refined spin on modern menswear, and their recent collection ‘Porter Country, HOWDY-BRO’ has evidently caught his eye this summer. Although my boyfriend did not grow up in Aotearoa, he can still appreciate the collection’s rural New Zealand inspiration. From their boxed flannel shirts, cotton cable knits, and baggy (yet tailored) pants; Porter James Sport is the epitome of smart-casual summer style.

Kangol

An interesting accessory can elevate just about any outfit, and like Jacob Elordi with his iconic designer ‘manbags’, you will never catch my boyfriend without some sort of Kangol hat. One can only equate the start of his fascination with the brand to the time he spent wandering the streets of New York City many moons ago. Whether it’s a convertible baseball cap or a cowhide bucket hat, Kangol has a style for everyone - even Remix fashion editor Martha can’t help but get behind a Kangol Beret.

adidas Originals

adidas has dominated the vintage revival movement, and no doubt, this moment will continue into the summer. As a fan of slim, low-standing silhouettes of the ‘old-school’ reprisals, the adidas Originals SL 72s and the Taekwondos have been on rotation in our household. Paired with jorts or some green adidas Originals sport shorts for a casual summer stroll, or paired with some tailored pants for a dinner out with friends, a pair of adidas Originals can do no wrong in my boyfriend’s eyes. You can only imagine his excitement for their newest sneaker collaboration with A BATHING APE®, with the new Orketro style coming straight from Japan to Aotearoa very soon.
