In conversation with Grece Ghanem: The Internet's Queen of Ageless Style
Known to her one million plus Instagram followers as ‘The Internet’s Queen of Ageless Style’, Grece Ghanem has captivated audiences with her seemingly ‘unconventional’ street style that reps an array of bold colours, powerful prints and classic silhouettes. Since launching her profile in 2010, the 58 year old’s growing profile continues to show women from all over the world that fashion knows no age, and personal style doesn’t expire.

You’ve become an icon for ageless style. What would you say to people who still believe that women should ‘dress their age’?
I would tell them that style has no age! It’s all personality related as style is a form of art and self-expression. Of course, as you grow older you grow wiser and you feel more confident in your skin. Your style evolves with you, but there are no rules when it comes to fashion and age. You can rock any look, at any age, and look as good as you feel in your skin.
How would you define ageless style?
For me, ageless style is building a wardrobe of timeless pieces – good-quality pieces that can be passed on from one generation to the next. I love to include statement pieces alongside a few staples. Ultimately, youthfulness is a state of mind!

You are a strong advocate for age diversity in the fashion industry, is that initially what drew you to sharing your style on Instagram?
Not really, this all started as a fun hobby between my daughter and I as we always enjoyed taking fashion photos. I believe it was seen as unconventional to be of a certain age sharing a fun style on social media, so people started to put titles like “ageless style icon”. I am really humbled! However, I strongly believe that women should remain visible, take risks and shake it up at all ages!
How would you describe your personal style?
My style is strong, graceful and timeless. It is basic with a twist. I like to mix vintage and contemporary, feminine and masculine silhouettes, as well as vibrant colours and power prints. All whilst making it look effortless and practical. Trying to inspire and empower women of all ages!

Who have been your biggest style influences over the years?
My grandmother has been one of my initial and everlasting style influences! She was a woman of grace and effortless style. I also love Iris Apfel's playful and vibrant style. Today, I draw inspiration from old photography, art and the world that is evolving around us!
We’re currently heading into winter here in the Southern Hemisphere. As a Montrealer, what are your winter essentials?
Nothing will prepare you for a Montreal winter!! For me, it is cashmere coats and knits, and big totes to keep my beanies, mittens and scarves. I also love a good pair of combat boots. I layer a lot and usually wear a set of thermals under my outfits.

What is the number one beauty philosophy you live by?
Beauty starts on the inside and radiates out. No matter what, you should embrace all the changes that accompany the different stages of your life. Don’t fear ageing, as beauty doesn’t disappear with age, it evolves!
Your relationship with your daughter Cheyenne is so special, what has she taught you when it comes to life, love and style?
My daughter has taught me not to be afraid to go beyond my comfort zone in terms of what I can achieve. I am always young in her mind. She updates me about new trends, and pushes me to try new things! We have a strong bond!

Finally, do you have any advice for the women of New Zealand who may be struggling with the idea of ageing, and the social constructs that come with it when it comes to how they should act, dress, etc?
It’s all about confidence, and overcoming the barriers you set for yourself. Ultimately, we dress for ourselves and not for others!
