Review: Fifty Shades Darker

The steamy second installment to the Fifty Shades trilogy has arrived in cinemas and director James Foley has attempted to continue the erotic and romantic love story between Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele.

It is fair to say Fifty Shades of Grey received plenty of criticism in regards to the 'cringe-worthy' moments scattered throughout the film, however, it could be argued that the second film is a total game-changer compared to what we've already witnessed.

Fifty Shades Darker digs deep in to each characters' roots, exploring traumatic pasts and sexual boundaries, which attributes a more suspenseful element to the story.  The story line was stronger this time, albeit still slightly predictable. As fans of the novel will note, this story line was slightly incoherent with an ongoing cycle of connect —> conflict —> sex.

Perhaps the need for more varied sub-plots thrown into the mix would have lifted the fact that the dynamic between Christian and Anastasia was becoming slightly stale?

Laughs were thrown around the theatre as Dakota Johnson used her natural charisma and quick wit to fulfill her character Anastasia, but whether or not this counters the core idea of physical lust and rigorous capitalism remains to be seen.

If you haven’t yet seen the film, definitely go give it a watch and you can be the judge! Is it 50 shades better or 50 shades of regrets?
