Coach - Family Tree
Words by Steven Fernandez
Family Tree is an album wise beyond its years. There’s a refined and sophisticated sound to this debut record from Auckland band Coach. Abraham Kunin on vocals and guitar, Jonathan Burgess on bass and Todd Beeby on drums have built on the success of their 2010 E.P by presenting a full-length record that strikes the listener immediately with its depth, cohesiveness and kaleidoscopic emotion.
Kicking off the record is the lead single 'I Have Two Shadows', a somewhat unrepresentative first choice with its sunny blend of electric guitar and undulating falsetto that provide a romantic backdrop. Standout track “Roulette Wheel” is kissed with the smokey tones of Tamara Rickett, while the warm double bass and drum grooves pull the listener along.
Produced and recorded by Tom Anderson, Family Tree is an effort reminiscent of Trinity Roots and My Bloody Valentine, but which refuses to compromise the integrity, craftsmanship and chemistry that make Coach something quite different on their own.
Family Tree is due for release August 18th 2012.
