How to turn your home into a moody sanctuary this Winter
It’s that time of the year again. Our Pinterest boards have moved away from summer Scandavian, minimalist and crisp interiors to cosy, enveloping and welcoming moody spaces.
The inspo for this winter? Sophisticated, dimly lit cocktail bar-inspired interiors. Think deeper, richer tones which invite you to cosy up with a glass of red, some cheese and a French film. It exudes class.
This season’s moody interiors go a little bolder, beyond the classic dark hues of greys, blacks and navy blues. It’s all about the deep earthy hues. Trust us, your humble abode will soon transform to a glamorous nest, looking as if it has been plucked straight out of Pinterest moodboards.
These deeper tones help to establish a little drama, creating dramatic backdrops to pair with staple accent decor pieces (any reason to shop for extra decor, right?). If you’re a little lost in where to start, we’ve styled spaces using this season’s trending Resene colour palette, making your job a little easier.

For a dramatic appeal, paint the top section of your walls in Resene Martini, a soft toned taupe, dry and bitter. Separate the bottom section by painting in Resene Camouflage, appearing as a martial green. Transform your sanctuary by separating the slightly contrasting colours, which in turn creates an optical illusion of a taller space, receding from the eye.
To create a seamless cohesion, treat your natural timber floorboards by utilising the Resene Colourwood staining in Dark Ebony. Enhancing the grain will not only keep the room sophisticated, but tying the richer colours together will elevate the space for a moody appeal. For maximum effect, opt for dimly lit lighting to cast dramatic shadows and add extra depth to the space.

Setting the sophisticated cocktail bar mood doesn’t stop at the walls - it’s all in the final touches. While you’re stepping out of your comfort zone, unleash the inner designer in embracing bolder upholstery and dream-like decor. Relish the opportunity to add fun accent chairs (who can go wrong!), which take inspo from the colour hues and create a sweet cocoon effect. Opting for cream, white and brassy tone accessories will assist in creating a rich-glamour appeal, much like the cocktail spaces we all dream of.

To enrich the season’s ‘IT’ colour palette, Resene’s Colour Experts recommend utilsing a matte paint finish, such as Resene SpaceCote Flat, to deepen the moody hues.
If you haven’t already jumped on the bandwagon in optimising swathes of dark, dramatic colours into your interiors, take this as your sign to get painting.
