Remix talked to the internationally acclaimed jeweller and man behind the brand, Gary Meaden, to discover why making bespoke jewellery is so special and how that ‘wow’ factor on a customers face is what keeps him creating.

What is so special about creating bespoke jewellery?

It’s all about the look on someone’s face, you know? The wow factor when they open the box and see their finished piece! For me, it’s all about following an idea from conception to fruition. Seeing something in mind and then bringing it to life, creating miniature works of art, little sculptures made out of precious gems and noble metals. It’s second nature to me really, it’s become my way of life. I love building stuff and turning dreams into reality.

How did you first get into this craft?

My father was a master diamond setter in London. Originally I actually wanted to be a watchmaker. He had the third-largest fine jewellery manufacturing company in the UK. So it was the natural course for me to follow. I was lucky enough to grow up in the industry – right at the heart of it. I’m Hatton Garden London born and bred, which is known as the Diamond Street! I worked for Graff Diamonds from 1976 to 1981 and this is where I honed my craft with a focus on attention to detail.

Where do you seek inspiration from the most?

Anywhere and everywhere. I’m inspired by people, places, architecture, nature and organic forms. Sometimes, the client or the brief. We either start with a stone or a setting. I love rich coloured gemstones, rubies or tanzanites – and diamonds of course!
