An ode to youth: Behind the scenes of Louis Vuitton’s Women’s Fall-Winter 2022 Collection.

Strolling through the Musée d’Orsay came a collection that breathed a sense of experimental adolescence across the floor. With hope pouring from the hemlines, the fashion show was a fresh display of vivid romanticism and inspiring idealism, shown through laidback layering and androgynous tailoring. Take a sneak peak at Nicholas Ghesquière’s ode to youth, Louis Vuitton Women’s Fall-Winter 2022 Collection.

The fashion show, nestled amongst sculptures and celebrities, took place in the central hall and Courbet Gallery of the stunning Musée d’Orsay, one of Nicolas Ghesquière’s favourite places. The first ever show at the famed French institution, the setting provided a quaint, yet quintessential backdrop for the ready-to-wear collection to breeze past its guests. Mimicking an afternoon spent strolling through a museum, the artistry was emphasised by the serenity of the space.

A collection of unlikely pairings, Ghesquière played with fabric and forms that, while seemingly mismatching, complimented and drew attention to each component in the process. Evening dresses topped with rugby sweaters, ties worn over feminine ensembles and chunky sweaters wrapped around the waists of pure glam gowns, the collection oozed a sense of idiosyncratic edge, while bragging the boundless quality of freedom that we so often associate with our youth.

This came at the forefront of the collection, according to Louis Vuitton’s Artistic Director, Nicolas Ghesquière.I would like people to sense that it’s a collection without constraint, that’s focused on freedom of movement, ease, and total comfort even though it involves very meticulous work in terms of materials.’

Oversized shapes and laidback layering emphasised an androgynous take on everyday apparel. Big blazers, waist-tied knits and graphic tees evoked the spirit of a teenage girl co-opting her boyfriend's oversized sweaters over her own. This subtle sartorial message creates a laid back feel for ready-to-wear, while paying homage to girlhood through quintessential images of youth.

The fleeting quality of youth was mirrored in the steady pace with which the collection seemed to move, passing through the halls of the Musée d’Orsay. Nuanced nostalgia was communicated through bespoke pieces and seemed to leave the floor as quickly as we unwillingly grew up through the years. Left with nothing but memories in a museum, like youth, we gaze back in delight and yearning at the Louis Vuitton Women’s Fall-Winter 2022 Collection.
