INSIDE NZFW: Remix Magazine’s top five shows of the week

Remix editor Steven Fernandez was down at New Zealand Fashion Week last week checking out the shows and taking notes of all the action on the new Samsung Galaxy Note7.

The Note7 was the perfect ‘do it all’ smartphone to take along to Fashion Week. Like its little brother the Galaxy S7, the Note7’s camera takes amazing photos and video in any light. The S Pen is great for scribbling down notes and reminders on the go, and the increased battery size meant the phone survived a full day and night of back-to-back shows between charges.

And with the Auckland weather unrelenting all week, the water resistant Note7 managed to survive mad dashes through the rain to the offsite shows.

Here are Steven’s top five shows from the week:

MERCEDES-BENZ PRESENTS HARMAN GRUBIŠA

Poignantly positioned as the opening show of the week, Harman Grubiša’s showcase in association with Mercedes-Benz was one of the most highly anticipated of the season. Designers Madeleine Harman and Jessica Grubiša definitely delivered, presenting their new collection ROCOCO with plenty of gold and dazzle. Models on the widened gold runway debuted a sophisticated collection rich with delicate ruffles, gold detailing, bold prints and fine tailoring.

TWENTY-SEVEN NAMES

Twenty-Seven Names provided a fresh approach to showcasing their new collection with an exhibition at Allpress Gallery of photography by James K Lowe shot at Bethells Beach and Woodhill Forest. Guests enjoyed coffee and champagne, as well as cheese boards, cookies and fudge, while they wandered through the exhibition and soaked up the coming looks from Twenty-Seven Names.

HAILWOOD

In what was undoubtedly one of the standout shows of the week, Hailwood presented his entire collection to the sounds of a full choir accompanied by grand piano. The sequined dresses, signature blazers and tailored suits fans have come to respect from Hailwood returned with gorgeous new silhouettes, colours and patterns.

FEDERATION

Federation made a welcome return to the New Zealand Fashion Week, after a few years away from the runway, and the house was packed to see what creative director Jenny Joblin would present with her latest collection. The bombers, jeans, tees and tanks that Federation have come to master were reminiscent of the ‘90s, with pops of colour and playful prints presenting a perfect balance of sleek fashion and laid back streetwear.

STOLEN GIRLFRIENDS CLUB

It’s the biggest show (and party) every year and this year’s Stolen Girlfriends Club show was no different. For 2016 creative director Marc Moore brought in Kanye West’s stylist superstars Seb Hunt and Dylan Richards to produce the show, which was presented in Kingsland’s First Scene warehouse space. The ‘luxurious grunge’ collection of leather, chaps, high boots and tees emblazoned with tagline ‘VIOLENCE TERROR CHAOS’ was illuminated by a sound activated light installation, designed by Angus Muir.
